Cobden are set for crunch clashes against Reddot after making a winning start to their new year
Cobden prepare for Dots clash with five-star victory
Camden Sunday Football League
TITLE outsiders Cobden Athletic started their year with a bang this weekend when they returned to action in the Camden Sunday League. Despite fielding a weakened side at Hackney Marshes, the Division One high-flyers eased past rivals Archway Allstars.
Patrick Jones opened the scoring with an exquisite chip, but his celebrations were cut short when Archway quickly equalised.
Jones wasn’t to be outdone, and he soon restored Cobden’s advantage with his second goal of the game. Super-sub Daniel Lockney came off the bench to bag a brace, while Kieran Reilly was also on target as Cobden ran out 5-1 winners.
Cobden must now show their title credential in back-to-back games against champions Reddot.
Unbeaten Reddot are now 11 points clear at the top of the table following a testing 2-1 win over CS Maritimo.
Maritimo took the lead courtesy of a fine individual goal from Mitchell Graham. The side should have added to their lead, with the influential Anthony Wright terrorising the Dots’ defence throughout.
Reddot keeper Jimmy Russell proved the difference between the two sides with a man-of-the-match performance, allowing the Dots to claim victory thanks to goals from Steven Bruce and John Donovan.
After the game, Reddot manager Micky Dowsett said: “Without Jimmy in goal we would have lost today. “We were lucky to come out of the match will all three points.”
Battling against a frosty pitch, Phoenix netted their second win in five games with a 2-1 victory over AFC Brasenose. Captain Darren May opened the scoring with a powerful header when he latched on to Neil Bralee’s corner.
Bralee was also the provider for the second when his inswinging free-kick found Jamie King, who scored what proved to be the winner with his first-ever goal for the club.
In Division Two, Sir Robert Peel and Boston Arms both hit six to clinch wins in their respective games against AFC Shooters and Dinamo Dorigo.
Field Crusaders also found the back of the net six times as they beat league strugglers MDM 6-1.
Eray Halil and Erol Mustafa scored two goals apiece, while Fuat Ibrahim and Callum Ferrand were also on target.
Unlucky Lovejoy injury blow
REDDOT’S win over CS Maritimo was overshadowed on Sunday when key defender Martin Lovejoy suffered another horrific injury.
The 22-year-old right-back, pictured with Reddot mascot Sonny Dowsett, had only just recovered from damaging ligaments in his right knee, an injury that kept him out of the game for eight months. Team-mates fear he has been hit by the same injury again – this time in his left knee.
Lovejoy, who lives in Queen’s Crescent, collided with an opposing player and was left clutching his leg in agony.
The defender is now anxiously waiting to find out the extent of the injury.
