Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 15 January 2009

High Street a disgrace

• COMPLAINTS about the gloom of Camden High Street (Letters, January 8) need answering not only by the Camden Town Unlimited but by the Camden Council.
The street is indeed a disgrace and not a place for pleasant shopping.
I recently helped an elderly lady who had tripped over on the uneven pavement and injured herself badly near the post office.
The paving is just terrible – the choice of the ugly grey slab is obviously the cheapest option as it does not last. I think it has been repaved recently but already looks bad. Also, it has not been done very skilfully. A pavement should last a lifetime.
Today I had no choice but to go that route and found the pavement slimy with grime and rain, covered in spit, dogs’ mess, vomit here and there. It was badly stained black around the lamp-posts by liquid rubbish seeping from black rubbish sacks. This is all so primitive.
Besides being horrible for local people, the many overseas visitors walking through all this to Mornington Crescent Tube (Camden Town Tube is shut on Sunday) look shell-shocked and confused by the shabbiness here.
In addition, can local people join with me in contacting the council to request a proper food market/farmers’ market in Inverness Street as the recent refurbishment there is spoiled by the trading there of non-food.
I suggest also that the stallholders there do not hang up the canvas at the back of their stall as it gives an ugly, closed, narrow passage behind the market, spoiling the atmosphere.
