Nicole Tham struts her stuff on the catwalk
Model behaviour: Teen tipped for fashion stardom
ON the catwalk she is a rising star tipped as the nation’s next top model, but at home Nicole Tham still has to do the washing up like every other teenager. The 17-year-old schoolgirl from the Taplow estate in Winchester Road, Swiss Cottage, beat more than 1,000 hopefuls to reach the final of the Miss Top Model UK 2009 competition.
The Westminster Kingsway College student has also been scouted to star in a horror movie about a killer dispatching catwalk models. Ms Tham – who is “half Chinese/ Malay and half Welsh/ English” – began her modelling career by accident last July when she was spotted in the crowd at a heat for the Oriental beauty contest Catwalk Live.
Judges waived the contest’s 18 age limit to allow Ms Tham to enter as a 16-year-old – and she won the competition. “I’ve always wanted to do modelling,” she said. “I used to take my mum’s heels and parade around in them. I was overwhelmed with happiness when I won the competition.”
Now she is down to the top 24 girls in the country hoping to win the March final. The winner gets a year’s contract with Impact model agency.
Ms Tham is walking with a book on her head to perfect her catwalk technique and getting regular makeovers from her beauty technician mum, Melanie, ahead of the nationwide final.
