Arsenal 4 Chelsea 1
England trio put Gunners clear at top
ENGLAND trio Kelly Smith, Karen Carney and Alex Scott were all on target on Sunday as Arsenal Ladies stretched their lead at the top of the table with a convincing win over London rivals Chelsea.
Smith fired the Gunners in front midway through the first-half when she darted into the box off the right flank and weaved her way past two defenders before coolly slotting the ball past Chelsea keeper Siobhan Chamberlain.
Three minutes later Carney exploited space in the Blues’ defence to score a second and put Arsenal firmly in the driving seat.
A mistake led to a third for the home side when Chamberlain dropped Scott’s cross into her own net. Chelsea pulled a goal back through Dunia Susi, but it proved little more than a consolation as Scott soon added her name to the score-sheet to round-off an impressive 4-1 victory. The result leaves Vic Akers’s side nine points clear at the top of the table.
