Camden New Journal - CROW by RICHARD OSLEY and DAN CARRIER
Published: 29 January 2009

Back to the future with the old guard could be the way to go

MAYBE Arsenal should act like those moneyed Milk Cup maestros Spurs in the transfer market and retrace their steps a little.

However old they are: Thierry Henry, Robert Pires and Patrick Vieira wouldn’t be bad additions to a squad losing pace with the top four.
And let’s not stop there.
Ex-Gunners Fabrice Muamba, Stephen Sidwell, big Sol, Lauren and the old warhorse Gilberto wouldn’t be terrible acquisitions.
In fact, everybody but Phillipe Senderos, David Bentley and that unmentionable Chelsea defender who married a blubber-eyed pop singer would be welcome back right now. I might even take Kanu ahead of Emmanuel Adebayor, whose dismal form this year has been capped by wide-open misses against Portsmouth, Bolton and Cardiff.
Yet deep down, we know the Tottenham policy of piecing back together its annually average squad is liable to fail.
Jermain Defoe is clearly a good signing, but remember he hardly got a game in his last stint for them.
It’s a different story for Chimbonda, Robbie Keane and all the others that Harry Redknapp might want to haul back to the Lane. They have already shown they are not ready to graduate to the next level.
Has anybody called Stefan Iversen, Ruel Fox or Justin Edinburgh yet?

SHUSH, don’t tell Harry but did you know our new boy Wilson Palacios has four football playing brothers called Milton, Jerry, Johnny and Edwin?
While he is looking for a job lot, I hear they all started off at the Honduras’s Club Deportivo Victoria before all five were transferred en masse to another team.
I wouldn’t put it past Harry, and it’s yet another reason he’s made for Spurs.
Our board aren’t shy at throwing money at a problem and Harry loves spending it.
They are perfect together.
It’s made for a jolly old January when your team are in the news, not for their creaking progression up the league or into a final at Wembley, but by the fact we’ve been linked with thousands of players, many of whom we’ve already seen in Lilywhite.
As for the rumours that Robbie Keane is on his way back, it must have sent a chill down Jermain’s spine: we learned last time that the pair can’t play together. If it must be an old boy, surely a tentative inquiry as to whether Berbs is nonplussed by the delights of Manchester by now?
And while we are in the process of trying to undo the damage done by Damien Comolli, is it possible room could be found on the coaching staff for a certain big Dutchman currently plying his trade pitchside in Germany? Now that would be a welcome back we’d all welcome.
