Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 12 Febuary 2009

Real need for 393 bus

• THE word in Kentish Town is that there is a new campaign to get rid of the 393 bus.
This is very surprising as well as disappointing. Surely local objectors can see that this route has been a real success.
Why should those of us who do not own cars have to do without this useful service? If we are ever to convince those who are selfishly wedded to their cars that they do not need to drive into or around London we must have first-class public transport.
Cross routes like the 393 are invaluable in filling existing gaps in the transport system.
The 393 is extremely well used, particularly in the North Road area where elderly people use the route frequently; it links Kentish Town, where I live, at either end of the extension with cheaper “full-blown” supermarkets as well as with Waitrose in Holloway Road.
It is well used both during the week and at weekends.
One group of residents who campaigned against this bus before the route was extended from Holloway to Chalk Farm were those living on Leighton Road.
It is true that this road is not an obviously ideal thoroughfare for a bus route but the 393 is small, modern, easily manoeuvred and relatively quiet.
The bus must be prioritised as a local service.
The disturbance to Leighton Road residents can be easily reduced by restricting access to other heavy vehicles such as the lorries belonging to building contractors.
Bus routes like the 393 can give real truth and power to the statement that no able-bodied person needs to own a car in London.
