Thriller cup win fires MDM league hopes

THERE were resounding cheers around Hackney Marshes on Sunday when MDM finally secured their first win of the season with a thrilling victory over FC Bertoli in the President’s Cup.
The Division Two strugglers went into the game having gone more than 1,350 minutes without picking up a single win in what is proving a long and frustrating campaign.
MDM (pictured) have been miles better than the four draws in 13 league games suggests, with poor refereeing decision, suspensions and simple bad luck all adding to their troubles.
But the harsh reality is that the league table doesn’t lie, and they find themselves six-points adrift of their relegation rivals after a string of poor performances.
Players, however, will now be hoping that Sunday’s nail-biting win over FC Bertoli will help spark their season into life. Bertoli twice took the lead, but a smart finish from Simon Harper and a Liam Moon penalty left the scores tied at 2-2.
With just minutes remaining in a frantic first-half, Adrian Yearwood netted what turned out to be the winner as MDM grinded out an anxious 3-2 victory.
The president’s Cup also witnessed the biggest win of the weekend as Sir Robert Peel beat Tevekkeli 10-0. John Bob led the goal charge with a double hat-trick, while strike partner Elvyn Blackwood scored twice. Paul Lambe and James Lindsay also both found the back of the net.
Meanwhile in Division One, high-fliers Phoenix continued their impressive run of form with a 2-0 victory over rivals Reddot.
James Cole opened the scoring with a goal-of-the-season contender when he evaded the challenge of two defenders to unleash a left-footed thunderbolt from
25 yards, which flew into the top corner of the net.
The points were made safe when Ricky Lucas intercepted a bad back pass from Dots’ captain Micky Dowsett before rounding keeper Jimmy Russell and stroking the ball into an empty net.
Leading scorer Cole has now netted 15 goals this season after scoring twice against Cobden Athletic. Lucas and Neil Bralee were also both on target as Phoenix came from a goal down to clinch a 4-3 victory.
Phoenix will now go into this Sunday’s London Intermediate Cup semi-final in confident mood as they prepare to face Yavruvatan FC at Wadham Lodge in Walthamstow.
Kick-off is at 2pm.
