Oasis renovation is music to every swimmer’s ears
• THERE have been recent rumours regarding the state of the Oasis Sports Centre.
As chair of the London Schools’ Swimming Association and a member of the London Pools Campaign I cannot stress highly enough how important being able to swim is from the cradle to the grave.
In order for this to be achievable there has to be relevant, good, working facilities available throughout London within easy access for people to get to.
In Camden there is a priority to maintain existing facilities so that there is adequate provision for all residents to have access to pools in order to achieve this important skill.
Work to the highly valued Kentish Town baths is progressing well and it will be really exciting when it opens in 2010 providing swimming for all for many, many years to come.
This will be the same for the Oasis Centre. The council has recognised its responsibility to residents and has given an assurance that it is taking this seriously in order to restore and renovate the building so that it too will last for many years.
The Oasis can boast of having a lovely heated outdoor pool. There are not many of these in London so this is a great asset.
Hopefully, Camden will boast of having high-quality facilities that will be available to all in order to learn to swim and take these wonderful skills forward.
I believe that in every school there is a potential Olympic champion at some sport or other.
Hopefully our new facilities will one day give a Camden youngster a chance of representing Great Britain in swimming.
