No regrets on Basson
• Lib Dems like myself do not need any lectures from Jonathan Simpson on candidate selection (‘I had to go’, February 19)
I have no regrets in helping to get Chris Basson elected. Everything I did then, I would do again, even if I knew of his illness – an illness that should not and cannot be allowed to disbar suitable candidates from office. In dealing with his problem, he was not helped by one of the most disgraceful local newspaper campaigns in recent years, Chris held firmly to his Lib-Dem ideals and his commitment to electors.
