Dr Geraldine Atkinson
Doctor found dead on holiday
FRIENDS and family of a young doctor are in mourning after she was found dead in a hotel room while on holiday in Iceland.
More than 300 people attended Dr Geraldine Atkinson’s funeral on Tuesday at St Joseph’s Church, close to her family’s home in Highgate.
Brief details of her death in Reykjavik on February 7 were read out at St Pancras Coroner’s Court last week. Coroner Dr Andrew Reid said the Icelandic authorities were awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination and the cause of the 24-year-old’s sudden death had not been established.
Although it was expected to take several months to determine, last night (Wednesday) Dr Atkinson’s father, Chris Atkinson, said he had received a call from an Icelandic pathologist who said she had died from a “cystic formation in her brain”.
Dr Atkinson, who was a junior doctor at the Royal Free, lived in Primrose Hill. She was a former student of St Michael’s Primary School and University College London Medical School in Bloomsbury.
Friends told of her “sharing spirit” and her “strong moral compass”.
Dr Atkinson was a volunteer for the Kith & Kids charity, which supports children with learning difficulties
