Young tennis aces show they’re among the best in country
TENNIS aces Roberto Preka and Micheal Copus served up a treat on Sunday when they both reached the final of their latest regional tournament at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton.
The triumphant nine-year-olds, who train at the Islington Tennis Centre in Market Road, saw off competition from some of the best young players in the country as they battled it out for the boys’ Under-10s south-east title.
In the end it was number one seed Roberto, who has just been named as Middlesex’s star player for spring, who claimed the crown, winning 4-1 and 4-0 in straight sets.
The victory capped off a great weekend for Roberto, who also beat Ben Mortimer from Highgate Lawn Tennis Club 4-1, 5-3 to win the Coolhurst Tournament in Crouch End.
Afterwards head performance coach at the Islington Tennis Centre Neil Murphy said: “I’m very proud of both boys. Michael has really improved over the past few months and is starting to show just how good he is, while Roberto remains one of the best under-10s players in the country.”
