‘Wee for a Wii’: win prizes with chlamydia tests

IT’S a prize draw with a difference. No need to send off a postcard to enter, as those who want to be in with a chance of winning a games console or an iPod just need to pop a urine sample in the post.
In an attempt to encourage more young men to take tests for the sexually transmitted infection chlamydia, NHS Camden has bought up prizes to “incentivise” the check-up.
The “wee for a Nintendo Wii” campaign, which will run until next month, is aimed at sexually active 16 to 24-year-olds – one in 10 are thought to have the infection.
Julie Edgecombe, who promotes sexual health to young people for NHS Camden, said she wants to banish the myth that screening is painful.
“Most young men think they have to have an umbrella put down their penis and that there might be syringes involved,” she said.
“But that’s not the case at all – it’s just peeing in a pot. We asked the under-25s what would make them go for screening.
“We’re giving away Nintendo Wiis and iPods. There’s been loads of really successful campaigns going over the country.
“You have a one in 50 chance of winning if you enter before the end of March.”
Chlamydia, known as the “silent epidemic” because it has no symptoms, can lead to infertility if left untreated.
Camden’s screening rates are well below the national average but it is hoped that around 3,500 young people will take part in the tests.
Participants initially text to enter. They will then be sent a urine sample bottle to fill up and send back.
Just 275 men were screened in Camden and Islington last year.
Ms Edgecombe said: “The trouble is for young men that they are not used to going to the doctor. The best thing about this is that you never have to meet anyone.”
Negative results will be confirmed by text and anyone testing positive will be contacted by telephone by a health professional and told to go to the local pharmacy.
Ms Edgecombe said: “It’s just a couple of tablets and it’s bye-bye chlamydia.”
