Time called on one o’clock club
FOR generations the One O’Clock Club on Hampstead Heath has been a beacon for new parents.
But now the popular children’s centre – based in the Peggy Jay Centre at Parliament Hill Fields – is to have its opening times drastically cut after the children’s charity funding the project decided it could no long pay for the service.
The Pre-School Alliance has funded morning sessions at the club for more than a decade but because of falling income have decided to pull out of the scheme after the Easter holidays. Afternoon sessions, funded by the City of London, are likely to continue.
Mother of two Fran Evans said: “It is a total tragedy. It’s a vital lifeline for so many people.”
A spokesman for Pre-School Alliance said they had little choice. He said: “As a result of current economic pressures we can no longer support the level of funding required and are unlikely to be able to continue running the group after the coming Easter break.”

WHEN the Government is worrying about child fitness and wellbeing, having a club like this shut down, that encourages children and parents out of the house, to socialise and run about, is a terrible tragedy. T. Ogilvie
