Ah, the memories… missed spot kicks that still bring a smirk to the old mug…

The top five missed penalties of all time?

• Ruud Van Nistelrooy: Ruud Van Nistelrooy walks into a bar. The barman says: Why the long face? Ruud says: I just hit the bar with a last minute penalty against Arsenal. Barman says: I didn’t mean that...
Ruud’s classic miss helped the Gunners on their way to a run of 49 unbeaten matches.
Martin Keown tries to talk sensibly about football on telly these days but he will always be remembered for his fantastically childish celebrations that day.

• Paul Scholes: Scholesy blew the FA Cup final penalty shoot-out against Arsenal. Hilarious, largely because United should have won about 7-0 in normal time.

• Juan Riquelme: For all the ranting and raving, Jens Lehmann’s last-minute contribution against Villareal in the 2005 Champions League semi-final was heroic. Riquelme’s miss led to a few sore heads the next morning.

• John Terry: All set up for Mr Chelsea to win his club the Champions League, John Terry smacked the post in a shoot-out with United last year. He pretended he slipped on a dodgy pitch, but we all know he bungled his big moment.
And, of course, last on the list:

• David Bentley: If you could elect one Spurs player to miss the crunch penalty, it would be the poser who left Arsenal because he wasn’t as good as Dennis Bergkamp. If he had been patient, he could be playing at a big club instead of pinning all his hopes on a miserable Milk Cup.
