Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 12 March 2009

Tenant movement must carry on Alan’s campaign

I WAS shocked to hear the terrible news that Alan Walter, chair of Defend Council Housing had died.
My deepest condolences to the family.
Alan had done an incredible job to co-ordinate campaigns in defence of council housing and will be greatly missed.
He was committed, with tireless energy – the best memorial would clearly be to continue the fight till it is won.
Even though he often had to battle against the pain from a back injury, he never felt sorry for himself.
I can clearly remember the day I sat with Alan for an hour as he drove me in the speaker car in St Pancras and Somers Town ward.
I knew he was suffering, but he wouldn’t stop because he was enjoying the sense of being a part of something that needs changing.

Truly an inspiration

• MY deepest and sincere condolences go out to Alan Walter’s family.
What a loss for Camden at this time of positive reaction from government.
Nobody will know just how hard Alan worked and indeed the hours he worked to save council housing.
He did not just stop with Camden. Alan worked just as hard nationally.
He was a true inspiration to us all, and he will be greatly missed by myself and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
LARRAINE REVAH

Outstanding activist

• BOTH locally in Camden and nationally we have lost one of the most outstanding tenant activists and supporter of council housing.
The sudden death at the weekend of Alan Walter is a great blow to many of us and I extend my deepest sympathy to his family.
Alan was a friend and colleague. I worked with him to support Defend Council Housing, the Camden “Say No to ALMO” campaign and also on Kentish Town District Management Committee where Alan was my vice-chair.
His unremitting labours on behalf of us all will be sorely missed and he leaves a gap that will be hard to fill.
He was still working right up to the end.
I will miss him.
BRIAN PORDAGE
Chair, Kentish Town DMC

Sad loss

• AS a housing lawyer in my day job, I had a lot of time for Alan Walter. I’m very sorry to hear of his death. I didn’t agree with him always, but respected his passion for the cause of council housing, his in-depth knowledge, and his ability to campaign energetically about housing and against the BNP.
His death is a sad loss for campaigners in Camden and beyond.

Challenge

• ALAN Walter was a valued member of our management committee and a towering strength for the cause of Defending Council Housing.
Although Alan would always talk-up the achievements of the collective surrounding him, often playing down his own individual selfless efforts, there is no doubt that he has single-handedly been the binding glue of this collective.
Alan will be missed right across the tenant movement, and beyond!
The challenge for the tenant movement now will be to “keep the pressure on”.
MERIC APAK
Chair, Camden Federation of Tenants and Residents Associations, NW1

Fight on

• I AM so sorry and sad to hear about Alan Walter’s sudden death.
Alan Walter was a wonderful worker for tenants’ rights and for council housing.
He will always be remembered for his dedicated work for Defend Council Housing.
We will always remember him and may he rest in peace.
We will continue the fight to Defend Council Housing.
CLLR ROGER ROBINSON
Opposition Lead on Housing.

Formidable

• I AM very sorry to hear that Alan Walter has died. He was a very good campaigner for housing and a formidable opponent to the council’s disgraceful policy of selling off council housing.
