The site under development in Haven Street
Developers ordered to remove fence
DEVELOPERS have been ordered by the council to remove an unauthorised 12-foot, barbed-wire topped fence across a public highway.
The Camden Market Holdings group, which owns Stables Market and much of the land known as Hawley Wharf, has been instructed to dismantle the steel gate and fence structure in Haven Street, off Castlehaven Road.
The director of Camden Market Holdings’ canal market site, Mark Alper, said the fence had been erected for health and safety reasons, in advance of the market’s reopening in three weeks’ time.
Mr Alper said: “Because of the damage caused by the fire, the site clearance work is very intensive, with a large number of health and safety considerations. “The gates on Haven Street were moved forward temporarily to make sure there was no danger to passersby while works are ongoing, but following discussion with Camden Council we will be moving them back into their original position as soon as possible.”
Some residents have grown concerned about the future of the Hawley Wharf area since it was revealed that the majority of the site was owned by a single developer, Camden Market Holdings.
Camden Council last month issued planning guidance for the site.
But the council has refused to explain why it took 10 days to respond to a New Journal enquiry over the status of Haven Street.
