Parking chiefs still under investigation
Probe unresolved seven months after suspensions
AN investigation into the conduct of two council parking managers is rumbling on, six months after the Town Hall pledged to bring it to a swift conclusion.
The New Journal has learned that colleagues have become disturbed by the length of the probe and its effect on staff morale.
The two men have been suspended since August and the matter has been left unresolved, even though the council has begun work connected to new contracts for its warden service.
Officials are drawing up tender documents that companies will be asked to consider as they bid for millions of pounds’ worth of work from the council.
National Car Parks (NCP) holds the current deal with Camden but other firms will compete with the company when its deal expires next year.
The Town Hall is expected to offer its biggest and longest deal to the winning operator.
In the absence of the two senior members of staff, the council has reorganised its parking department and is framing the terms of the deal.
Rachel Stopard, head of the environment department, invited the New Journal to a press briefing in October and said at the time that the internal probe would soon be resolved.
But as each month has passed since, a council spokeswoman has repeatedly declined to provide any more information on the ongoing case.
No entry: Pay and expenses stay secret
THE Town Hall insisted this week that it could not answer questions about former parking supremo John Meyer, who left the council suddenly just before Christmas. Officials said information about pay and expenses were not available because Mr Meyer was recruited by an outside agency. Mr Meyer had the job of interim parking manager but was expected to stay on at the Town Hall until the summer at least.
At the time of his departure, the council said his contribution had been welcomed but that he had made “errors of judgment”.
