Business hit by wardens
• WHEN a traffic warden writes a parking ticket it takes roughly 30 seconds but for people on the receiving end it brings the headache of knowing that’s more money taken out of their dwindling leftover budget that week.
For small businesses in particular, to get not one but two tickets in a couple of weeks it is even more unfortunate. It is even more infuriating when you are not in the wrong and are just going about your business.
This was exactly what Aftab Ahmed was doing when he got ticketed twice for unloading outside his own shop, which serves the local community well and where Aftab works 15 hours a day providing this service (Silly wardens, silly fines, angry shopkeeper, John Gulliver, March 19).
He is not only a shopkeeper but a friend and confidant to all his customers. For many years he was on the front line of the fight against anti-social behaviour when illegal drug issues were blighting the lives of all residents in that area. He “stood up and was counted”, a trusted friend in times of difficulty.
So when a traffic warden comes along and slaps a ticket on his van unjustly his survival as our amiable, accessible neighbourly corner shopkeeper is put at risk!
The government have pledged financial help to businesses such as these, and the Lib Dem/Tory coalition in Camden are talking about helping small businesses.
Start now by tackling this iniquitous wrong by overzealous traffic wardens. This is one way of helping small businesses.
