Modric targets Euro spot after Chelsea victory
‘I hope we can keep climbing the table’
MATCH-winner Luka Modric believes Spurs can pull off one of the shocks of the season by qualifying for the revamped UEFA Cup. The diminutive Croatian playmaker was speaking after his goal sealed all three points against Chelsea in Saturday’s London derby at White Hart Lane, helping Spurs stretch their unbeaten run in the league to six games.
“It meant so much for everyone – the players, the fans,” he said. “I knew we didn’t have the best record against Chelsea in the years before so I’m so happy to beat them. “I’m proud because I scored the goal, but I’m prouder about the way we played. If we want to continue beating these teams we have to fight for each other and that’s what we did.”
Although Chelsea laid siege to the Spurs goal in the last 10 minutes, it was mainly hit-and-hope football and the home side stood firm.
Modric said the team had a new zest about them, and that the players were aware their record against the top five teams was outstanding.
Out of the sides fighting for the Champions League spots, only Aston Villa have beaten Spurs this term, and that was back in the dark days of September when the team were nailed to the foot of the league.
He added: “That is so positive. We’re unbeaten against Arsenal, Chelsea, United and Liverpool. “We beat Liverpool here, beat Villa away and now Chelsea. “There is optimism for what we can do next season, but first we have to look for the rest of this season and to play like we did against Chelsea. “We are in good form and I hope we can keep going and climb the table.”
