John’s free workshop
• I AM writing to commend the work of the poet and comedian John Hegley, who on Thursday April 16 took time out from touring nationally to visit Elfrida Rathbone Camden so that he could give a free performance and workshop for some of the young disabled people who use our services.
For an hour and a half, 16 young people (and some of their parents who could not resist the temptation of seeing JH) laughed until they were in tears and were helped to sing and make poetry themselves. To be part of it was really one of the most memorable nights of my career in social care.
For someone who has seen so many audiences in his time, from Edinburgh to New Zealand, John certainly showed that he could connect with and royally entertain a small, select, and very appreciative, group of admirers.
John visited to help highlight the work that Elfrida Rathbone Camden carries out in Camden, using innovative approaches based on service users’ own talent, skills and humour as a route to expression and communication and to make sure that people who face many hurdles are not excluded from their own community.
Our current fundraising campaign sees Kate Horbury running in the London Marathon on Sunday.
