Blog off! Alarm as website posts rejected market design
AN internet blog sparked alarm after revealing architects’ sketches of a giant glass and steel building mapped out for the area wrecked by the Camden fire.
Web users left messages on the Londonist blog criticising the designs after they appeared under an entry titled: “Is This Future For Camden Town?”
The accompanying article on the website – which is compiled by a team of contributors who describe themselves as “London obsessives”, read by thousands of people every day – questioned what would happen to the prime canalside site.
It said: “Anywhere else, this would be a fairly jolly example of glass and steel retail. But in the much-loved warren of Camden markets anything other than bricks and catacombs is going to draw criticism.”
Internet surfers responded with comments such as “silly” and “hideous”.
But publicists for the site owners, Camden Market Holdings, said the sketches were hardly entertained as a potential way forward for the site – hit by fire last February – before being spiked.
A spokesman said: “The image on the blog was an early conceptual idea from 2007 that was rejected at the time by the site owners as inappropriate for Camden.”
The publicist added that the developers were working towards a council planning brief but that work was at a “very early stage”.
The images only came to light by accident. A firm specialising in computerised impressions put them on its own website to showcase past work.
The Londonist later posted a clarification that the ideas had been abandoned by the architects involved but the false alert has provided a gauge of public opinion.
Simon Pitkeathley, head of Camden Town Unlimited, a business interest group, said: “What we would like to see is something in keeping with Camden as it is.” |
