Dots retain cup in style

CAMDEN SUNDAY LEAGUE
Senior Cup Final
Reddot 4, Phoenix 1

RAMPANT Reddot ran riot on Sunday when they retained the Senior Cup with a convincing win over rivals Phoenix at Wingate and Finchley’s Abrahams Stadium.
Although the Dots enjoyed plenty of early possession, it was Phoenix who almost broke the deadlock when leading scorer James Cole saw his instinctive effort come back off the woodwork.
Reddot rallied and took the lead five minutes before the break when Jason Medford met Wesley Borghys’s free-kick to glance the ball home from 12 yards.
The Division One champions doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time when James Ricketts smashed the ball into the back of the net from close range.
Man-of-the-match Borghys saw his initial shot well saved by Phoenix keeper Barry Breen but Ricketts, who won the ball in his own penalty area to ignite the counter- attack, had continued his storming run down field and was at hand to slot home the rebound.
The match was all but wrapped up early in the second-half when Medford’s defence-splitting pass allowed Liam Barnabie to score a decisive third, before substitute Paul ‘Trigger’ Reid came off the bench to score a stunning 20-yard curler.
It proved a frustrating afternoon for the Phoenix fans, who twice saw appeals for a penalty waved a way by the referee. They were finally given something to cheer late on when youngster Aaron Clark scored a consolation, but the damage had already been done and Reddot ran out 4-1 winners.
Afterwards goalscorer Ricketts, who has been a key figure in the Dots’ defence this season, said: “I want to dedicate my goal to my pregnant girlfriend Natasha. I don’t get many, so this one is for her and our little baby, which is due in June.”
Reddot manager Micky Dowsett added: “I would like to thank my whole team for the effort they have shown throughout the season, especially those who didn’t get to play in the final.
“To win both the Division One title and the Senior Cup is a magnificent achievement, and we couldn’t have done it unless every single one of the boys had played their part.”
