Mary Hannon, who takes a 30-minute walk to work every day
The Tube? Better to take travelling into work in your stride
Walk To Work Week: ‘I don’t understand why people use stuffy, tin can transport’
THERE are not many of us who would put “within walking distance” at the top of our job search criteria.
But for Mary Hannon nothing is more important than being able to avoid public transport.
The 41-year-old, who works in the Town Hall’s communications department, loves walking to work so much she recently decided against a career switch to the Fire Service after realising there would be too much “dashing about”.
This week is national Walk to Work Week and Mary is calling for more people to follow her lead and put a spring in their step.
“I walk in to King’s Cross every day from Islington and it takes about 30 minutes,” she said. “It’s great. I hate the idea of getting on the disgusting Tube or the bus with all those miserable people looking all stressed out and tired. I couldn’t take a job where I couldn’t walk in.
“I don’t understand why people use that kind of stuffy tin can transport – and why they sit around waiting for them for so long when they could have got there already if they had started walking. Most bus journeys take longer than it does when you walk.”
Mary, one of the few people who got into the Town Hall when the snow came in February, said she would rather arrive a little bit late if she overslept than catch the Tube.
“I don’t sleep in really, but if you do, I’d say just chill out a bit, there’s no need to rush,” she says. “It doesn’t matter if you are little bit late every now and again.”
The council was out in Triton Square, Euston, this week promoting the walking week which ends on Sunday.
Green police on stilts handed out free pedometers, walking guides, foot balm and walking diaries to commuters to encourage more people to choose walking over other forms of transport.
Councillor Chris Knight, the council’s lead member for the environment, said: “Walking not only has a number of health benefits but it is fun and good for the environment too. This is a great opportunity for us all to stamp out air emissions from cars and make Camden a healthier, greener place to live, work in and visit.”
He added: “I think a lot of the time people don’t realise what they would see if they walked to work. We want to get people enjoying the place.”
