Curtis on track for Olympic glory

FENCER Curtis Miller has been fast-tracked as a future British Olympian after being handpicked to join the Lloyds TSB Local Heroes initiative.
The talented 17-year-old, who trains at Camden Fencing Club, will receive a cash injection of £1,000 to help with the cost of training and competing as one of only 250 youngsters selected from across the country.
Miller attended the London launch of the initiative in Roehampton last week, where he got the chance to meet former British Olympians Iwan Thomas, Leon Taylor and Mark Foster, who gave the Holloway youngster advice on food, nutrition, media and training.
Miller insisted rubbing shoulders with the likes of five-time Olympian Foster was all the inspiration he needed to follow in the footsteps of the star swimmer.
“Seeing people who have been to an Olympics and done it themselves makes you think you can get there too.
“I just want to be as good as I can and hopefully one day get to the Olympics. I am extremely honoured to be given this award and the money is going to help a huge amount with regards to my funding.”
Miller has already demonstrated his potential by winning several national events and is now setting his sights on making his mark at this summer’s British Championships.
And Foster – who made his debut at the Seoul Games in 1988 – believes Miller couldn’t be better placed for glory in Sheffield and beyond.
“Curtis has shown great potential and has proved he is a talented fencer,” said Foster.
“The tricky thing for athletes is trying to fund themselves in the years before they make it into the full GB squads.
“Curtis has already taken some big steps towards that and hopefully this funding can help him continue to improve.”
Lloyds TSB is providing £1,000 to more than 250 young sporting prospects identified each year across Britain in the run-up to 2012 and beyond.
