Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 14 May 2009

No short-cut

• I WAS concerned to read Mick Farrant’s letter about the sudden closure of the Arctic passage to Kentish Town in Gospel Oak (In dark over short-cut, May 7).
What he did not say was that the council have recently spent tens of thousands of pounds on resurfacing and regating the tunnel under the railway only to close it after less than a month.
The resurfacing does not comply with the Disability Discrimination Act as there is a nine-inch step which would be impossible for people in wheelchairs to navigate. Although this is not the reason for the closure the council should take note.
Mr Farrant should be congratulated that following his intervention there are now notices in Regis Road warning of the closure. The route is used by at least five Royal Mail staff with their trolleys as well as many residents.
It is unclear whether Liberal Democrat and Tory councillors were informed and also what, if anything, they are doing about it. Alas, this is a further example of the council wasting very large sums of our money.
