Yes we can! From garden tidy-ups to video diaries, teenagers rise to the challenge
A GROUNDBREAKING project that saw Camden teenagers wield garden trowels and make video diaries for a chance to win tickets to music gigs ended last weekend.
Teenagers from Haven Youth Club in Hawley Road, Camden Town, dug up their last weeds at St Michael’s Church last Saturday in return for tickets to watch bands on stage just days earlier at the X-Crawl.
As part of the Camden Crawl, the under-age event was staged at the Camden Road church for those too young to get into the festival’s other venues.
The Castlehaven Project, as the scheme was billed, was organised by Camden Crawl, Haven Youth Club and youth charity Envision, and supported by the New Journal.
But the work is not quite all over for the volunteers. Another part of the deal gives young people involved in the project – which has included renovating St Michael’s garden – the chance of a work placement at some of the trendiest places in town.
Koko venue, Select Models agency, PR companies and music websites have offered to give youngsters the chance to learn something about their industries.
Fr Philip North, of St Michael’s, praised the young people’s work as a “fabulous job,” adding: “People were thrilled when they saw the work on Sunday.” |
