Clash of the Titans: Dots edge new boys Pakenham in President’s Cup thriller
Camden Sunday League
THE two juggernauts of the Camden Sunday League went head-to-head for a place in the semi-finals of the President’s Cup.
Newcomers Pakenham (pictured in green) have taken the league by storm this season, winning the Division Three Championship, the Challenge Cup and the Junior Cup.
Meanwhile veteran campaigners Reddot (in yellow) celebrated a double triumph of their own, capturing the Division One title and the Senior Cup.
So fans were expecting fireworks when the two teams met at Hackney Marshes, and the teams didn’t disappoint as they battled it out in a nine-goal thriller.
Dots raced to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Steven Bruce and Adam Nicolaou, but Pakenham hit back to level the scores with Tony Hunn and Daniel Carins both finding the back of the net.
Wesley Borghys fired Reddot back in front with a deflected
free-kick, before Bruce went on to complete his hat-trick with a quick-fire double.
Matthew Phillipson and Carins reduced the deficit for Pakenham, but the Dots managed to survive a frantic onslaught and clinch a 5-4 victory.
Man-of-the-match Bruce scored another hat-trick on Sunday as Reddot beat Mayville 5-0 in their final group game.
Borghys completed the scoring to set up a semi-final date with Division Three side River Fleet.
