For Charlie Ratchford
• I HAVE heard that when this Liberal Democrat/Conservative administration at Camden Council rip down the Charlie Ratchford Centre, which has been a place thousands of people, the elderly, disabled and the community generally have used for all the facilities there (and build a new centre round the back with, of course, the luxury flats there on top of the new centre) the name Charlie Ratchford will be deleted for some new name.
This is a disgrace and shows how little the present crowd at the Town Hall know of the tremendous work and dedication of the late Councillor Charlie Ratchford, then leader of Camden Council in the 1960s/1970s and with whom I had the pleasure and honour of working as a young councillor.
Charlie was the person who was paramount in establishing the borough of Camden from the three boroughs, Hampstead, St Pancras and Holborn and worked so hard for the borough and its people. A railway worker in bad health towards the end of his time he still led the council to great levels of achievement.
For Lib Dem and Tory councillors to want to erase this man’s name from a centre for working-class people is typical of the inane lack of knowledge of the present administration concerning the pioneers who set up a local authority which the Lib Dems/Tories are destroying.
