A model to be followed?
• SO John Murphy, the contractor who died recently, was said to be a pillar of the Irish community in London. I wouldn’t hold him up as an example to follow.
At the end of the war, Murphy, unlike most ordinary fold, had a few quid in the bank and was better placed than most to take advantage of reconstruction with a goodly supply of compatriots straight off the boat: dispirited, bewildered, bemused and ever so pliant, to be bent to the will of a strong man's ambition. What happened to those men is another story.
