Staff cuts to save libraries
• CAMDEN’S library staff members do face job insecurity, (CNJ May 14). So does everyone in the country lucky enough to have a job. With the unemployment total forecast to exceed 3 million, it is unrealistic to expect total job security in any employment.
Austerity is on its way back. The instinctive local government reaction to this is to cut services to the public to reduce costs. It is the simplest solution to budget difficulties and, as a monopoly supplier of services, it can get away with it.
Luckily, Camden does not have to do that in its library service because new technology can reduce the costs. It has always been CPLUG’s primary task to ensure that library services to the public are not cut and it will continue to carry this out.
