The Bear cheek of it! TV Talent stars could be forced out
THEY are the newest stars of Britain‘s Got Talent, a homegrown male burlesque troupe supported across the country by young and old.
Fingers crossed then that the semi-finals are not held in Camden, because under the borough’s revised laws The Dream Bears would need a special adult licence to perform their act.
The trio of portly gentlemen face the global singing sensation Susan Boyle in the next round of the ITV talent show, but their biggest hurdle could be getting future work after licensing chiefs ruled that burlesque was “adult entertainment of a sexual nature”.
Dream Bears performer Dan Browne, who lives in Cromer Street, King’s Cross, said: “There needs to be a burlesque tsar. Burlesque performers work very hard at what they do – we would be the first to complain about being called strippers. It ain’t burlesque if you show pink – that’s one of our tenets.”
Mr Browne warned that acts would begin to leave Camden if the clampdown on burlesque continued.
The group, who formed 10 months ago, became TV stars overnight with their unique version of the can-can.
Their other acts include a builder routine and a ribbon and Lycra “homage” to the 2012 Olympics.
King’s Cross councillor Jonathan Simpson, the borough’s former licensing chief, said: “Camden’s policy has made press headlines around the world because it’s quite draconian and does not recognise what burlesque dancers have been doing since the 1940s.”
Cllr Simpson said residents must be protected from a “sleazy, topless dancing element returning to pubs”, but added: “If The Dream Bears can go on prime-time TV on a Saturday night then it’s just harmless family entertainment.” |
