Gomes reveals early season pain
Tottenham keeper: ‘There are big, tall strikers here – but I’m used to it now’
THE rough and tumble of the Premiership has caused more injuries to Heurelho Gomes in six months than he has had in his entire career, the Spurs goalkeeper has revealed.
Gomes helped Tottenham set an unlikely record on Saturday, with the single goal he conceded against Manchester City securing the most successful home defensive record in the club’s 126-year history – just 10 goals were scored by visitors to White Hart Lane all season.
Gomes has revealed that his difficult autumn, which saw him branded a dodgy keeper after a series of blunders, was down to the fact he was so badly injured by uncompromising forwards.
Speaking before the 2-1 victory against City, he said: “In my first few months at Spurs, I had to spend most of the week doing very little. “I was getting lots of treatment and could only do a little ball work before each game.”
The Brazilian moved to Spurs from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in the summer for £8million. Things began to go wrong when he got the blame for Tottenham’s worst start to a season.
Gomes, who turned out every week despite suffering from bruised ribs and a sore hip, believes that the stick he got on the nation’s back pages made him a marked man. “The media went on about it and I was being targeted, but it never unsettled me,” he said. “I knew my potential. “When I returned to full physical fitness, I quickly got back to my best form. I have had more injuries in my first six months here than I have had in whole career. “There are big, tall, strong strikers here, but now I am used to it. I am more comfortable.”
