Council ‘encouraged’ by post office closure summit
THE Town Hall has held talks with the Post Office over the closure of a branch in Regent’s Park.
Lib Dem council leader Keith Moffitt said he was “encouraged” by the summit on Tuesday at which the closing of the Albany Street office was high on the agenda.
It closed for the final time on Friday, leaving elderly residents from the Regent’s Park estate facing a trip to Camden High Street to collect their pensions.
Run within a pharmacy, the counter was closed down by the Post Office after a long-running dispute about weekend opening hours.
Cllr Moffitt said the council was trying to help out in a search for an alternative venue for the office, close to the branch. “It may take a few months but I think the Post Office are optimistic that they will be able to find another venue,” he said. “The talks we had with them were encouraging.”
Cllr Moffitt said the council had considered operating some services from the borough’s libraries but did not have any buildings from which large amounts of money could be handled.
He added that the main branch in Camden High Street was in line for a makeover. |
