Camden New Journal - CROW by RICHARD OSLEY and PIP WROE

Over the top with Kevin Davies – he’s in a league of his own

THE new testament, as of last night...
And so it came to be that the good man won the Champions League. And the bad man, he did not win the Champions League.
The good man left Arsenal with a tear in his eyes. The bad man left Arsenal with a snarl and pound signs in his eyes.
The good man had done everything he could to win the Champions League for Arsenal. The bad man was flirting with another club while Arsenal was trying to win the Champions League.
The good man performed miracles that Emmanuel Adebayor could only dream of. The bad man wasn’t as good as Gael Clichy.
The good man’s name is still chanted at the Emirates Stadium with pride and affection, welcomed back as a visitor like the prodigal son. The bad man’s name is still chanted at the Emirates Stadium with repulsion, returning only in enemy blue shirt.
The good man, since leaving Arsenal, has won the Spanish League and the Champions League – a genuine Barcelona galactico. The bad man, since leaving Arsenal, has won no league titles and no Champions Leagues. The good man. And the bad man.
Well done Thierry, it was good to see a Gooner beat United and get his hands on the Champions League trophy. Few people have excelled like that after leaving Arsenal. Just ask Ashley Cole.

CONGRATULATIONS to Bolton’s Kevin Davies, who has now committed the most fouls in five of the last six Premiership seasons.
Kevin, you are a wonderful throwback to the good old days of English football. One day a statue of you executing a poorly timed lunge at the knee of a slighter player will stand outside the Reebok Stadium, or perhaps the FA headquarters.
As Man United decide which of their trophies to cram into the display case this year, the chasing pack are left to wonder what went wrong. United didn’t decimate teams like last year, they just quietly beat everybody, “the true mark of champions” as Match of the Day insist on telling us over and over again. Similarly, Newcastle lost to everyone, even more quietly – that’s called “the true mark of Championship”.
The Redknapp renaissance has also adopted a self-destructive edge this week as Spurs chase Djibril Cisse, a rumour so inexplicable it must surely be based on some truth.
In another of Arry’s delightfully subtle moments he suggested David Bentley will choose to leave this summer because he’ll realise that “he doesn’t get in the team even when Aaron Lennon is injured”. Fair point, well made.
So, after we buy Sunderland’s strikers and sell our excesses, we can settle into a sensational pre-season and then it’s the top four!
