Young Guns at the double
THE young guns of Arsenal clinched the FA Youth Cup for the first time in eight years on Tuesday with a professional 2-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield.
The result secured an emphatic 6-2 aggregate scoreline following the Gunners’
4-1 first-leg victory at the Emirates Stadium on Friday.
Managed by former Arsenal hero Steve Bould, the triumphant side have given fans fresh hope for the future after completing a magnificent league and cup double.
On Tuesday midfielder Sanchez Watt opened the scoring with a neat finish midway through the first half, but Liverpool pulled the scores level on the night six minutes after the break through Lauri Dalla Valle.
Arsenal continued to push forward and grabbed an Anfield winner when Daniel Ayala deflected Watt’s cross into his own net.
The Gunners all but won the trophy on Friday when goals from Watt, Gilles Sunu, Jack Wilshere and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas sealed a resounding 4-1 win at the Emirates Stadium.
But captain Emmanuel-Thomas still had to wait until Tuesday to get his hands on the cup, lifting the trophy exactly 20 years to the day after his famous namesake, Michael, wrote his name in the Arsenal history books with a dramatic title-clinching goal at the same stadium.
