Hospital test mistake leads to patient recall
PARENTS of children tested for cystic fibrosis by doctors in the Royal Free Hospital are being recalled for further tests after the New Journal revealed how a three-year-old girl was wrongly given the all-clear for the fatal illness.
Libby Pitman was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) in Great Ormond Street Hospital in March, despite “sweat tests” results at the Royal Free coming back negative on two separate occasions. The hospital, which suspended the tests until an independent review files a report to board members in the next four weeks, is contacting parents of children tested in the hospital since 2006.
A Royal Free spokesman said: “To date no further false results have been identified. The services will not re-commence until the trust is satisfied that all processes and procedures meet the required standards.”
The CF Trust, a charity promoting awareness of CF, said that official hospitals must carry out at least 50 sweat test each year to be allowed to diagnose the condition. |
