Post office to reopen ‘soon’
THE top boss of the Post Office Ltd says he is “hopeful” of reopening a popular counter service in Regent’s Park which has been the focus of a determined campaign – despite an ongoing wrangle over contracts.
Adam Crozier, chief executive of Post Office, has written to Frank Dobson MP following crunch talks over the future of the service in Albany Street, where the sub post office closed amid protests on May 23.
Mr Crozier said: “I am pleased to say that we are discussing this with the sub-postmaster and we are hopeful of reaching an agreement with him. “I hope this reassures you of our commitment to providing a new post office for our local customers as soon as we can.”
Frank Dobson, Labour MP for Holborn and St Pancras, said: “This puts on the record and confirms that they do not want the Albany Street post office to close and they will find either another postmaster or another site in the area.”
Albany Street was closed following a contractual dispute between the sub-postmaster, Vimal Shah, and his managers.
The Post Office said Mr Shah was in breach of his contract for failing to open at weekends. He said he was running up heavy losses and could only afford to open five days a week.
Mr Shah was this week offered a temporary contract to reopen the post office five days a week – but the deal includes a clause that would see him automatically replaced with just seven days’ notice when a permanent replacement was found.
Mr Shah said: “Basically the proposal is that I will re-open temporarily until they find someone else. I don’t see why I cannot be reinstated. What happens in six months when they do that? I have to go through this again and go back to my staff and say we cannot stay open. “Unfortunately the public are stuck in between two sets of people who cannot agree.” |
