Promise of action at ‘deathtrap’ junction

A “DEATHTRAP” junction at the centre of a residents campaign could be transformed after the council’s elected roads chief pledged action.
After months of meetings and campaigning following the death of a pensioner and dozens of serious incidents at the recently laid-out junction of Marchmont Street and Tavistock Place in King’s Cross, the Marchmont Street Association took their concerns to the Town Hall on Monday night and received their first promises that something will be done.
Brunswick Centre resident John Doran, 76, was killed at the junction last December, and campaigners insist that the new double-cycle lane, traffic lights and pedestrian crossing combine to make it so confusing.
“People say ‘I’d rather cross the Euston Road than Tavistock Place’,” said campaign leader Ricci De Freitas on Monday. “The data on accidents is not reaching Camden and it is not reaching TfL (Transport for London).”
Since December, council highways chiefs have changed their stance on the junction – which was only completed last year – first telling the New Journal it was no more dangerous than anywhere else, then claiming it was low priority, then saying lack of cash from TfL meant they could not survey it for a year.
Councillor Chris Knight said on Monday: “It (the junction) is a dog’s breakfast. The recommendations you’re making are the right ones. I will sort it.”
