‘Knockout!’ School’s youngsters take part in course at the St Pancras club

NEW sports sessions at William Ellis School really do pack a punch after youngsters joined forces with coaches from St Pancras Amateur Boxing Club to develop a series of hard-hitting PE lessons.
A group of 25 boys from the Highgate Road secondary school have spent the last seven weeks travelling to the Saints’ gym in Kentish Town, where top coaches CJ Hussein and Roy Sullivan have been showing them the ropes.
The project is a tripartite venture involving William Ellis, the Youth Sport Trust and Deutsche Bank, a leading German, which is currently investing in various sporting events chosen by the pupils.
PE teacher at William Ellis, Mick Keeshan, said he was delighted with the new arrangements.
“CJ and Roy have provided our students with the chance to make the vision of high-quality PE and sporting opportunities for young people a reality, through the wonderful discipline and sport of boxing,” he said.
“As we head towards the 2012 Olympics, it’s time for everyone to get involved. Our boys had a great time, and got the chance to meet professional boxers John McDermott and Martin Power.”
Mr Keeshan added: “The boys have learned the art of discipline and self-control, and have grown in confidence and self-esteem.
“Most importantly, they have learned that boxing is a sport to be respected and admired for all the life lessons it teaches. You are in the ring on your own and you are the decision-maker. What a wonderful opportunity to become an independent learner.”
Daniel White, a Young Sports Leader at William Ellis, hit the nail on the head by saying: “The boxing project has been a knock-out success.”
