Golden girls are set for the big time
GOLDEN girls Kelly Hookway and Robin Neumann of Camden Swiss Cottage Swimming Club were in scintillating form at the second weekend of the London Region Age Group Championships at Crystal Palace.
Kelly achieved her fourth national qualifying time on her way to claiming gold in the 200m freestyle with a time of 2.17.55 minutes.
The speedy 12-year-old also took silver in the 800m freestyle in 10.09.15.
Coach Paul Hurly was especially pleased and believes there is more in the tank as Kelly has just returned to full training after fracturing her wrist.
Team-mate Robin also topped the winners’ podium, winning gold in the 100m backstroke in 1.15.66.
The 11-year-old went on to take a bronze in the 200m freestyle, and in doing so recorded her fourth national qualifying time of 2.24.34.
Olivia Willis, 11, improved on her national time in the 100m backstroke, winning silver with a time of 1.25.56. Tamsin McKinnon also medalled in the 100m breaststroke, taking a bronze in the 13 year age group.
The Camden girls’ relay team of Robin, Olivia, Tamir Gonen Cohen and Cordelia Grossman kept up the outstanding performances, taking two silver medals in the 200m freestyle and the 200m medley relay.
Fearsome Freddie steals show
FEARSOME Freddie Cornwell rewrote the record books yet again at the weekend when he finished more than one and a half seconds ahead of his nearest rival in the 100m backstroke at the Regional Bagcat (age group) Championships.
Taking to the pool in the boys’ 10-year-olds category, Freddie (pictured above) put in an outstanding long-course time of 1.17.54 minutes to smash the regional event time by over two seconds.
The triumphant swimmer also knocked 2.5 secs off the Anaconda club mark, which he set himself earlier this year at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge Pool.
Freddie capped a show-stopping performance by adding new record times in both his 100m freestyle and breaststroke events, and the 200m butterfly.
Team-mate Dominic McLoughlin celebrated his 14th birthday in style after setting a new Open Men’s record in the 200m freestyle. The speedster gained a creditable sixth place finish in the final with a personal best time of 2.09.83. Dominic’s long-course times of 59.27 in the 100m freestyle and 1.08.93 in the 100m butterfly also made it into the record books.
Meanwhile rising star Morgan Mockler, 12, set excellent times of 1.18.80 in the 100m backstroke and 2.46.32 in the 200m freestyle in her novice regional competition.
