New Transport Minister is urged to tackle station
NEW Transport Minister Sadiq Khan was given food for thought in his first month in his new post when Labour activists asked him to look urgently at the dilapidated condition of Camden Town Tube station.
Tulip Siddiq, who is standing for Labour in Regent’s Park ward next year, met Mr Khan in Westminster this week.
She said: “The Minister said he would take the matter up with Boris Johnson as a matter of priority. He also said that he would come and make a site visit to Camden Town to see it for himself.”
Last week, the New Journal revealed that the crumbling station would become exit only all weekend throughout the summer as private finance company TubeLines carries out emergency repairs to one of its two escalators. Travellers unable to use the deep station’s stairs will be forced to use Mornington Crescent or Chalk Farm stations for 10 weeks when the escalator closes on July 22.
After London Underground’s plans to redevelop the station and build flats on the site were thrown out in 2005, Transport for London (TfL) chiefs admitted that there would be no funding for major works on Camden Town tube until at least 2018. |
