The fight goes on
• THERE are 17,000 plus on the housing list and I know there are currently 564 families occupying one-bedroom flats who need a two-bedroom flat and 88 families occupying one- bedroom flats who need three-bedroom flats.
Where are the accessible flats for disabled people?
I have asked Frank Dobson MP to see if the housing minister will receive a deputation from the Camden Council Labour group to see if we can persuade him to agree to the 4th option in housing today, massive funding for housing improvements in our borough. If this deputation is achieved then it will be one of Labour councillors and tenant representatives.
In addition, this Council are seeking to sell off, not only housing stock, but older people’s centres like Ingestre Road and sell the centre to private developers for- private luxury housing!! What a cheek.
The City of London has taken over derelict shops and made them into accessible flats for disabled people. Why can’t we do that? Why can’t we do what we did in the 1960s in Camden and compulsorily purchase empty private houses and turn them into flats?
Perhaps the tenants will form a united tenants’ association with the power, anger and strength of that formed more than 40 years ago in St Pancras Borough to fight a despicable rent system to be imposed on tenants.
Whatever happens all of us, tenants and Labour councillors, will fight to save what we think is precious, our housing stock. People deserve the right to live in a good, well designed and happy home and that is what is wanted.
No sell-off of housing stock; no privatisation; no Rachman landlords; and updated and modernised estates for all. The fight goes on.
