Reigning champ! Gary beats weather
GREEN-FINGERED gardeners celebrated their determination to conquer the weather on Saturday when they turned out in force for the 147th Highgate Horticultural Society Summer Show.
Despite the soaring summer heat and lack of rainfall, there were a staggering 240 exhibits on display as the United Reformed Church in South Grove, Highgate, was overrun with vibrant fruits and flowers.
Champion Gary Sycamore again led the trophy chase winning six cups and two diplomas.
Mr Sycamore, who lives in Holborn, won the best exhibit in the cut flowers class with his vases of Dahlias, Purple Loosestrife and Daylily. After the show, he said: “The society is always looking for new members, and I’d happily lose out on winning a trophy if it meant that we had even more people competing in the shows.”
Alan Dallman was also one of the big winners on Saturday, walking away with five trophies and a diploma.
