Knappett’s knock dents Hampstead
Middlesex County Cricket League
Finchley 237-8 dec
Hampstead 218-8
A MIGHTY knock of 96 by Finchley’s Josh Knappett dented Hampstead’s title hopes on Saturday. Knappett smashed 10 fours and a six before losing his wicket just shy of the century.
Paul Weekes did his best to curb Finchley’s climb as he took four wickets for 79 runs.
Leo Smith provided strong support with 3-74, but the visitors still managed to score 237-8 off 60 overs before declaring. Weekes proved just as effective with the bat as he top scored for Hampstead with 65 off 119 balls. Mubasher Hassan added a well-crafted half-century, but Hampstead could only manage 218-8 before they ran out of time.
This earnt Finchley four points courtesy of a faster run-rate, while a frustrated Hampstead side had to settle for just a point for their efforts.
In the disaster zone
Division Two
South Hampstead 211 ao, Acton Town 204-8
North Middlesex 124 ao, Harrow 125-8
Twickenham 273-5, North London 125 ao
IT proved a disastrous weekend for the Camden and Islington-based clubs in Division Two. The only real highlight saw Tim McMahon score 73 runs as South Hampstead managed 211 against Acton. Their opponents scored 204-8 off 47 overs in reply to earn a four-point winning draw thanks to a slightly faster run-rate.
Harrow’s Darren Crook all but dismantled North Middlesex single handedly with a devastating bowling display. He took seven wickets at the expense of just 61 runs as North Middlesex were bowled out for 124 within 41 overs.
Harrow still made hard work of their victory, losing eight wickets before they reached their winning score of 125.
Meanwhile North London remain rooted to the bottom of the table after suffering 148-run defeat in their game away against Twickenham. The home side hit 273-5 before declaring, a target that North London couldn’t get anywhere near as they were bowled out for 125.
Unlucky Highgate
Division Three
Highgate 200 ao, Barnes 201-7
HIGHGATE were unlucky to suffer a three-wicket defeat on Saturday after a good team performance against Barnes. Having been put in to bat, scores of 50 from Jim Denning, 45 from Graeme Jenkins and 44 from Phil Brown saw Highgate post a competitive score of 200 all out from their
55-over innings.
Brown continued his form with the ball as he took four wickets for 56, supported by Tony Duckett who finished with 3-54.
Despite their efforts, Barnes still managed to creep over the winning line with a score 201-7 off 43 overs, with Joe Taylor stealing the show with 87 not out.
