Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 13 August 2009

Exhausted by the stupid people who drive cars

• I ASKED a car driver, parked and stopped in Baynes Street, Camden Town, if she would turn the car engine off while parked; she had been parked for some minutes. It was a hot day, the driver was wasting fuel and the vehicle unnecessarily polluting the environment.
I was expecting the driver and passenger to say that they had the engine on because they wanted the air conditioning on. So I was surprised to be told that the engine was on so that they could have the car radio on.
When I stated that they could listen to a car radio with the engine off, I was told that that would run the car battery down.
I was lost for words that weren’t polite and had to walk away!
Why are such stupid people allowed to drive cars?
Should not the Department of Transport, led by Lord Adonis of Camden Town, ensure that the driving test takes account of such lessons – the environment, economy of resources, how the car works? Car ownership is about more than just the Highway Code.
What hope is there for the planet when it’s populated with such people?
