Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 13 August 2009

Citizens in the dark about advice

• KENTISH Town Citizens Advice Bureau serves a huge area.
It’s relied upon by hundreds of local people.
Its hard-working team provide a vital service, particularly during this recession.
In short it’s invaluable.
So plans by Camden citizen’s advice to restructure our local bureau and close it – even for a short time – are ill-conceived and a real concern for people round here.
Every week I am asked what citizens advice are planning: the answer is that we just don’t know.
It’s not right that local people are left in the dark.
Out in Kentish Town Road and on the doorsteps this weekend hundreds of people have been signing our petition to save the bureau.
They want reassurance, something that’s in short supply from citizens advice chiefs.
I’ve called on the chief executive of Camden CAB to meet local residents and campaigners and explain their plans. But they have refused to meet local people.
They say that they’re talking to the council. Well that is not good enough. Local people can’t wait for news to trickle down through the council bureaucracy. That’s why local councillors, local residents, and I are calling for a public meeting now.
Camden’s citizens advice chiefs are in charge of a really important service and its right that they should come and talk publicly to local people about their plans.
Jo Shaw
Honorary Legal Adviser, Kentish Town CAB
