Lucky to be alive! Puppy Emily recovers after being dumped in an air-tight bag
ABANDONED, dumped in a bin bag and left for dead – life could not have got off to a much worse start for this eight-week-old puppy.
The Staffordshire bull terrier cross was discovered starving and near suffocation by a passer-by who heard “crying” coming from an airtight rubbish bag next to the recycling bins at the Camden Town Sainsbury’s on Sunday afternoon.
But you wouldn’t know it to look at her now.
Staff at the Mayhew Animal Hospital have been amazed by the swift recovery of the young pup, which has been named Emily.
Claire Harper, the Mayhew animal welfare officer caring for Emily until she is strong enough to stay with a foster carer, said: “She wouldn’t have had much longer in that bag. She was in very poor condition, weak and malnourished with fleas, worms, fever and diarrhoea.”
Abandoned dogs are “huge problem” in London, said Ms Harper, especially with “status breed” dogs like Emily.
“They are being sold to people who often don’t particularly want dogs. Unfortunately, some people would see [abandoning them] as the only option. There’s no excuse for that. There’s always someone willing to help,” she added.
“People don’t know what care these dogs need. They’re often used as weapons. It’s unfortunate because they are a sweet breed. Dogs like Emily are the victims of all this.”
Emily will be neutered and microchipped before a new home is found for her when she is 12 weeks old.
She remains shy around people but has found an unlikely friend at the animal shelter – a black and white cat called Radcliffe.
Ms Harper said: “She’s completely fallen for him. But we have to be careful – he’s not that keen on her.”

I THINK a lot more education at school level might help a bit, but to some it's just a case of being cool and one of the boys to have a status symbol and make it do what the owner wants through fear and hunger. I'm afraid that maybe the owners should be put down not the dog.
