Youth project Cup is Partners triumph
THERE were thrills, spills and goals galore at the Winchester Project in Swiss Cottage on Wednesday as teams gathered for a special FA Cup.
Sides from across the capital battled it out in the prestigious Under-12s tournament as they looked to ignite their summer with silverware.
Host team The Winch couldn’t make the most of their home advantage and they were surprisingly knocked out in the semi-finals.
And in a fitting tribute to Sunday’s FA Community Shield, Chelsea took on Manchester United in the final.
Representing The Blues, youngsters from the Churchill Gardens Youth Club in Pimlico ran out winners after beating Isledon Wolves, who played as The Red Devils. Sharp-shooter Ali Saleh, 12, opened the scoring, before Eri Felix, 12, wrapped up a 2-0 win with a clinical finish.
There were individual awards for Isledon Wolves’ Elijah Gyebi, 12, who was voted Best Goalkeeper of the tournament; and South Hampstead FC’s Christopher Regis, 12, named as the Most Sporting Player.
The tournament was funded by Partners for Improvement in Camden, that is refurbishing and maintaining the nearby Chalcot estate. Having donated £1,100 for the day-long competition, chief executive Julie Selhep said: “We’re working in the community for 15 years and wanted to work with a local project and put something back into the area.”
Unity Cup joy: Seniors’ supershow
PLAYERS from the Winch didn’t have to wait long to get their hands on some silverware.
Having missed out on a trophy in their own competition, the club’s Under-16s side showed their younger counterparts how it should be done on Tuesday when they won the Unity Cup.
Held at the Castlehaven Sports Pitch, two fantastic goals from Peace Otegbola saw the Winch beat rivals South Hampstead in the semi-finals. The triumphant team then got their hands on their first-ever trophy with a 2-0 win over St Mary’s thanks to a deadly double strike from Mohammed Betzimer. |
