All-rounder Weekes fires Hampstead
Middlesex County Cricket League
ALL-ROUNDER Paul Weekes claimed five wickets and almost 50 runs on Saturday to fire a Hampstead win over Division One rivals Winchmore Hill.
The off-spinner put in a commanding display to pick up 5-93 in a 27-over spell. Dexter Thomas also took 3-31 as the hosts were dismissed for 231.
Weekes also hit 47 off 75 balls to guide the visitors to their seventh win in 14 games. Sumeet Sharma top-scored with a mighty knock of 76, including seven fours and a six, as Hampstead clinched a two-wicket victory with a winning 234-8.
In Division Two, North London boosted their bid to avoid relegation with a three-wicket win over neighbours North Middlesex.
Having been put into bat, North Midd slumped to 33-3 as Evan Flowers, Scott Richardson and Maxwell Creese all surrendered their wickets cheaply.
Adam Evans Holmes and Jaron Semper set about rebuilding the innings, but North London’s economical bowling display saw them concede just 17 runs in 11 overs.
Semper eventually found his rhythm and went on to hit a cavalier 66, including six fours and five sixes. Another highlight was the performance of 14-year-old Zulfi Azom, who scored 25 not out before North Midd declared on 182-7 in the 53rd over.
Tom Wakeford was the pick of the North London bowlers with 3-56.
North London started aggressively, racing to 50 runs in just eight overs.
Opener Chris Ridley went on to top score with 59, while a last-ditch stand from Neil Gill and Ben Wakeford just edged the league strugglers to victory with a score of 185-7.
Elsewhere in Division Two
South Hampstead were forced to settle for a winning-draw in their match against Enfield.
Having scored 264-6 declared from 50 overs, South Hampstead looked on course for a much-needed victory.
Enfield, however, managed to frustrate their opponents as they held on to their final two wickets to avoid defeat, ending play on 178-8. |
