Two fall to their deaths in a month

TWO people have fallen to their deaths in the space of a month from tower blocks on the Regent’s Park estate.
Coroner’s officers said Jodie Calvey, 45, was found dead on July 2 at base of a block backing onto Euston Road.
A month later Daryl Ross, 38, of East Finchley, died at the base of a separate block on the estate. An inquest into his death was opened two days later on August 7, and adjourned until next month.
Neighbours who witnessed police and paramedics fighting to save the man’s life described seeing dozens of emergency workers rushing around him. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Photographer Angel Antolin, 74, said: “Nobody knew about him. I don’t know whether he jumped. People didn’t hear anything. I am just a bit shocked.”
Another witness said the drama unfolded outside his door at around lunchtime, with more than 20 emergency service staff working on him at one point. An air ambulance landed nearby but was not used.
In the wake of the deaths, Regent’s Park ward councillor Heather Johnson asked for a briefing about safety on the estate, but found that intercoms were working and the roofs were not easily accessible.
“If people are looking to do it [commit suicide] they will find somewhere to do it,” she said. Instead, money should be spent on catching people with mental health problems and depression before they carry out any suicidal intentions.
